Native Southern Magnolias

 

Bigleaf Magnolia

Native. Magnolia macrophylla Bigleaf Magnolia. Limited quantities. Bigleaf Magnolia is best known for the huge oblong-obovate leaves which are the largest simple leaves of any North American native tree. Foliage is bright green on top and silver-gray underneath. Fragrant, cup shaped flowers bloom in early summer. Blooms are white with a pale pink base. Red seed pods appear after flowering.

 


Brackens Brown Beauty Magnolia

'Bracken’s Brown Beauty'

Native. Magnolia grandiflora 'Bracken's Brown Beauty' Southern magnolia. Evergreen tree 20' - 30'. A more compact southern magnolia for small landscapes with a pyramidal growing habit with an oval crown. 'Bracken's Brown Beauty' has the oblong, leathery textured leaves which Southern Magnolia is known for. Foliage is glossy, dark green on top with a cinnamon brown underside. In the spring and 'Bracken's Brown Beauty' produces large, creamy white, fragrant saucer shaped flowers. Primary bloom is in late spring with sporadic blooming throughout the summer. A useful landscape plant as a tall, dense privacy screen, specimens or back of a border tree.

 


D.D. Blanchard Magnolia

'D.D. Blanchard'

Native Magnolia grandiflora 'D.D. Blanchard' Southern magnolia. Evergreen tree 50'. Large, glossy evergreen leaves with rusty orange brown undersides, lighter than other southern magnolia cultivars. 'D.D. Blanchard' is an evergreen tree with a compact, pyramidal growth habit. Flowers are creamy white, very fragrant and globe shaped. 'D.D. Blanchard' may be used in a landscape as a tall, dense privacy screen, specimens or back of a border tree.

 


Little Gem Magnolia

'Little Gem' Magnolia

Native. Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem' Dwarf southern magnolia. Evergreen tree 20' - 25'. Evergreen tree with pyramidal shape and smaller, dark green foliage with a rusty brown underside. 'Little Gem' has a very compact narrow form, making it useful for smaller gardens. It blooms at a very young age with primary bloom is in late spring then sporadic blooming throughout the summer. Large white flowers are fragrant and showy. 'Little Gem' is a popular choice for Georgia gardens.

 


Sweetbay Magnolia

Native. Magnolia virginiana sweetbay, swampbay, or swamp magnolia Evergreen Tree 20' - 25'. Medium to fast growing. Evergreen to semi-evergreen, medium green leaves have silver underside which has a frosted appearance. The foliage of Sweetbay is a lighter green than Southern Magnolia cultivars. The bright scarlet red seeded fruit which ripens in late summer attractive to birds. Large flowers of Sweetbay are creamy white and very fragrant with a light lemony scent.

Betty Magnolia

'Betty' Magnolia

Magnolia macrophylla 'Betty' bigleaf magnolia deciduous 10' - 20'. Large purplish - pink flowers. Part of the Little Girl Series, features a shrubby habit and large, showy flowers in spring. blooms are a stunning reddish purple and cup shape, emerging before the leaves. 'Betty' is a wonderful choice for lawn plantings, as a foundation plant or in an informal hedge. 'Betty' may bloom sporadically in summer.

 


 

Yellow Butterflies Magnolia

'Butterflies'

Fragrant. Magnolia 'Butterflies' deciduous 15' -20' with large, yellow flowers. 'Butterflies' is an unusual magnolia tree due to the bright yellow blossoms in spring. 'Butterflies' is heat and cold tolerant, as well as will tolerate a little shade. Yellow flowers appear before leaves.

'Jane' Magnolia

Magnolia x 'Jane' Japanese magnolia. Deciduous 10' - 15'. Hardy shrub or small tree, 'Jane' is a member of the 'Little Girl' series of Magnolias. Blooms in late spring to avoid frost damage. Flowers appear before the foliage and are showy a reddish purple color on the outside with a tint of white on the inside. Blooms are large and tulip shape with a light fragrance. Foliage is deep green with a slight leathery appearance. 'Jane' is a great pick as an accent shrub, small specimen tree or or mixed garden.

 


Margaret Helen Japanese Magnolia

'Margaret Helen'

Magnolia 'Margaret Helen' Japanese deciduous 15' - 25'. Bowl shaped, lavender violet blooms. Flowers freely borne even on young plants before leaves emerge. 'Margaret Helen' has a multi branched, upright habit.

 

Royal  Star Magnolia

'Royal Star' Star Magnolia

Fragrant. Magnolia stellata 'Royal Star' Star Magnolia. Deciduous small tree 10' - 15'. May be grown in shrub form in a large, oval shape or as a small tree with a spreading, rounded crown. 'Royal Star' is very showy in bloom. In early spring, fragrant flowers appear before the foliage. The blossoms are star like, double white and have a slight pink tint. In late summer 'Royal Star' produces seeds in greenish pods which split open during fall.

 


Vulcan Japanese Magnolia

'Vulcan'

Magnolia 'Vulcan' Japanese deciduous 15' - 25'. Showy, brilliant magenta red blooms are very large and heavily textured for a spectacular spring display. 'Vulcan' has an erect, open branched habit when young that grows into a more rounded shape as it ages. 'Vulcan' is prized for the unique red flower color and huge size of the blooms.
